Singapore is an island city-state and the smallest country
in Southeast Asia. It is located on the southern tip of the
Malay Peninsula, south of the Malaysian state of Johor, and
north of the Indonesian Riau Islands. It is just 137 kilometres
(85 miles) north of the Equator.
Singapore has a highly developed market-based economy, and
is often considered to be a developed nation. It ranks 25th
on the Human Development Index which measures standard of living,
and second in the Index of Economic Freedom.
Singapore has traded in its rough-and-ready opium dens and
pearl luggers for towers of concrete and glass, and its steamy
rickshaw image for hi-tech wizardry, but you can still recapture
the colonial era with a gin sling under the languorous ceiling
fans at Raffles Hotel.
At first glance, Singapore appears shockingly modern and anonymous,
but this is an undeniably Asian city with Chinese, Malay and
Indian traditions from feng shui to ancestor worship creating
part of the everyday landscape. It's these contrasts that bring
the city to life.
